My dear parishioners,
We are deeply saddened by the horrific shootings in Buffalo and most recently the elementary school in Uvalde. We mourn and weep for these innocent children, women, and men. We pray for the families and victims of these terrible offenses against the precious gift of life. May they know the comfort of the Risen Lord and the consoling strength of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is Lord. Jesus is with us.
Pope Francis prayed publicly at his weekly general audience in Rome for the victims of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. “With a heart shattered over the massacre at the elementary school, I pray for the children and adults who were killed and for their families,” the Pope said. “It’s time to say “Enough” to the indiscriminate trafficking of guns. Let’s all work to ensure that such tragedies never happen again.”
For its part, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops released this statement, “There have been too many school shootings, too much killing of the innocent. Our Catholic faith calls us to pray for those who have died and to bind the wounds of others, [as we] join [in] prayers. . . As we do so, each of us also needs to search our souls for ways that we can do more to understand this epidemic of evil and violence and implore our elected officials to help us take action.”
In past statements, the USCCB has supported efforts of reasonable gun control measures, including a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks, and restrictions on the purchasing of handguns.
Let us remember that life is a gift from God. It is always sacred.
Blessings always. Peace,
Fr. Bob Cilinski
Pastor
