Monongah, WV Mine Disaster

December 6, 1907, a massive explosion occurred at the Fairmont Coal Company, Monongah, WV, culminating in the worst mining disaster known to date. Over 500 miners were killed, a majority of them, Italian. Many were from the Molise  region of Italy. Unfortunately, as time passed, Monogah was largely forgotten.

Enter educator and former Honorary Italian Consul Joseph D’Andrea. Of Italian heritage and hailing from the area of many of the miners, he researched the event and explored the lives of the people involved. The result was a book bringing history to the forefront: “Monongah: Cent’Anni di Oblio,” or “Monongah: 100 Years Forgotten.”

For the next NIHCS program, the author’s brother, NIHCS member Lucio D’Andrea, will elaborate on the history of the disaster and show an enlightening video.
