March 1974

In March 1974, Nativity offered its first funeral Mass; the presider was Father Frank Ready. The deceased was James Robert Heiberg, age 77. Mr. Heiberg was a widower; his wife, Alice, had preceded him in death in 1955. They had one son, James Edward Heiberg. The date of his death was March 18, 1974; the exact date of the funeral was not recorded.

Mr. Heiberg was born March 11, 1894, in Brooklyn (Kings County), New York. His parents were John Christian and Mary (Erickson) Heiberg. Mr. Heiberg served in the New York State National Guard during World War I. Prior to his retirement he worked in railroad maintenance. At the time of his death, he was a resident at the Woodbine Nursing Home in Alexandria, Virginia. In these early days, funeral Masses were offered at St. Mary’s Church. Burial was at Fairfax Memory Gardens.

From that date to early June 2022, Nativity has offered 1,807 funeral Masses.
