Prayer Shawl Weekend

“You created every part of me, knitting me in my Mother’s womb.  For such handiwork, I praise you. Awesome is this great wonder” Ps. 139: 13-14

This is the scriptural theme of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Nativity. The aim of this ministry has been to provide a tangible sign of our prayers and concerns to the seriously ill of our extended community. Prayer shawl members knit or crochet shawls suitable for a man, woman, child or baby who is seriously ill, and pray for the one who will be receiving the shawl.

The Nativity Prayer Shawl Ministry is in its 12th year and has over 50 members who meet monthly. We are very excited about this ministry, which provides a “mantle of prayer” to recipients who receive the consolation and peace that only God can give. Each recipient’s name is recorded in a book and is remembered in prayer by the prayer shawl ministry and at each weekend mass celebrated at Nativity. The shawls are blessed by our priests, and a prayer card is attached to each shawl.

Since its beginning, the Nativity ministry has distributed over 2,000 prayer shawls to individuals “across the street and around the world”. Prayer Shawls have gone to people in Burke as well as people from Maine to California and Iraq to Russia. We have received stories that some shawls have been handed down to several members of the same family and that some recipients have chosen to be buried with their shawls. All who have received shawls have experienced God’s love in some way.

Prayer Shawl Weekend

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be available at all masses on the weekend of March  9 & 10 to distribute prayer shawls.

If you are in need of a prayer shawl for yourself or others who are seriously ill, we will be in the Narthex. It is important to realize that the shawls are just a tangible sign of the prayers of our parish for those in need. Please remember to pray for those who receive a prayer shawl and seek God’s consolation and peace. Although there is no charge for the shawls, if you wish to give a donation it will go for the cost of the yarn & other needs.
