Nativity’s Monthly Sensory Mass

2nd Sunday of the month at the 1:00 pm Mass

In an effort to embrace and welcome our neurodiverse members of our community, Nativity Catholic Church will be hosting a monthly Sensory Mass on the second Sunday of every month at the 1:00 pm Mass.  All are welcome to attend.  A special invitation is extended to any person in need of sensory accommodations.

Palm Sunday Mass

Nativity’s next Sensory Mass will be on Sunday, April 13.  The Church celebrates Palm Sunday that day, which means palms will be available in the back of the Church and the readings during the Liturgy of the Word will be longer than usual.  Aside from those liturgical differences, all of our regular accommodations will remain the same. You can also still participate in Mass in the Fr. Ready Room while watching the live-stream or access the quiet calming room in the back of Church. Since this Sensory Mass will be longer, families might also consider building in extra breaks in the quiet calming area if needed.

What is a Sensory Mass?

A Sensory Mass requires: a welcoming stigma-free environment and accommodations to help reduce over-stimulation and sensory overload.  The Mass will include: softer music, dimmer lighting, pictorial resources, and self-regulation tools for those with special needs. Families are also encouraged to bring any regulation tool (noise reduction items, quiet fidgets, flexible seating items, and weighted objects, etc.) that can support focused-attention and provide comfort to a person so they can feel safe in their environment.

The Sensory Mass is open to anyone who wishes to participate.  Many people can benefit from the stigma-free and less stimulating environment, including those with sensory processing challenges, autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and adults with Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.
